The only prompt optical emission detection of a gamma-ray burster (GRB) (see GAMMA-RAY BURSTS) was for GRB990123 (figure 1) by the ROTSE-I experiment (http://www.umich.edu/~rotse). This emission peaked around V=9 but decayed to V=14 about 10 min after the burst. ROTSE-I used 10 cm telephoto lenses plus a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, so almost any amateur set-up could make the same detection...
