Hall Thrusters offer several advantages over other kinds of electric thrusters. They have a high specific impulse, a reasonable thrust to power ratio and not so many erosion problems as compared with the typical Ion Thruster. However, one of their main drawbacks is their high plume divergence, leading to less thrust efficiency and more interference on the spacecraft (solar panels, optical instrumentation, charging and contamination). The Double Stage Hall Thruster configuration has been proposed in order to separate the ionization from the acceleration zone. This could lead to a reduction of the plume divergence. In order to demonstrate it, we have simulated the behaviour of a Double Stage Hall Thruster, considering a new magnetic configuration. In comparison with the typical Hall Thruster divergence, we have achieved significant decrease of the plume divergence. On the other hand, the same kind of oscillations was observed.
