The chemical evolution of Precambrian seawater was studied from REE patterns of 20 samples of Precambrian banded iron formations (BIFs), determined using isotope dilution mass spectrometry. It is shown that the REE data for these BIFs, that ranged in age from 3.4 to 0.65 Ga, are consistent with a model for BIFs in which Fe and REEs derived from submarine hydrothermal systems were upwelled from the deep ocean, mixed with oxidizing surface water (with some continentally derived REEs), and deposited on the continental margins.
