The effects of the sudden appearance of spots on a star's radius and luminosity are calculated. Variations in luminosity associated with the birth and disappearance of spots and with the activity cycle are studied on time scales much less than the Kelvin-Helmholtz time scale, and luminosity changes are calculated for a simple model of the distribution of spots on the stellar surface. An analytic model for the stratification of the convection envelope is used to show how the diffusive time scale and the Kelvin-Helmholtz time scale follow from an energy equation, and how they relate to each other. Changes in surface luminosity and radius due to changes in efficiency of convection in the envelope are also calculated, and radius changes, in particular, are very small.
