The Luminosity Functions (LF) of eight old star clusters of the SMC have been produced and compared with the LFs of galactic globular clusters.
The clusters L 1 t and L 15 exhibit a large peak at Mυ =00±0.5 where horizontal branch (HB) stars are expected. This feature is more prominent in these clusters than in the comparison galactic LFs and can be attributed to younger massive stars of low helium abundance or to very old evolved stars. From evidence shown in their colour magnitude diagrams it is more probably that these clusters are young and rather similar to intermediate age galactic clusters. A second peak at Mυ= = -2.0±0.5 mag, which is also very conspicuous, implies the presence of more massive stars and, therefore, strengthens the former evidence.
The LFs of the clusters L 20, L 14, and L t 3 fit very well the LF of the galactic globular M 3 whereas the LFs of the clusters L 82, L 3, and HW 62 seem to fit better the LF of M 92. So these clusters appear to have an older halo-type stellar content.
