Recent observations in the visible and near infrared of two point-like sources in NGC 7538 near the positions of IRS 1 and 2 are presented. Arguments are raised toward identifying these stars with the excitation sources of the associated H II regions. Photometric measurements are used to derive obscuration and reddening of the two stars. It is found that the star associated with IRS 1, an H II region with a deep 10 micron absorption feature and containing maser sources, has visual extinction comparable to that of IRS 2, which lacks 10 micron absorption and maser sources, in disagreement with the often postulated universal relation between extinction and 10 micron absorption optical depth.
