Interstellar Matter

Scientific paper

Fullerenes (C60 and C70) were discovered only a decade ago as a result of a study of carbon clusters formed by laser vaporization of graphite. But it was not until 1990 that proof of the discovery and isolation of this third form of ordered carbon was finally made. Since then, there has been considerable interest in discovering whether fullerenes occur naturally on the Earth or in certain stellar environments. To date, there have been only two reports of fullerenes in the geological environment. Although these reports are certainly exciting, there are still many unanswered questions such as what were the processes that led to the formation of C60 in a natural environment?. In this thesis I will examine the hypothesis that fullerenes, or fullerene-related molecules, are a ubiquitous form of carbon in the Universe. I intend to address several questions concerning the presence of fullerenes in cosmogeochemical samples, the mechanisms of formation for fullerenes on the Earth and in certain stellar environments, and the role that fullerenes may have played in the Earth's early carbon cycle.
