A reaction mechanism involving the association of two sulphur atoms through ethylene, the latter acting as a catalyst, has been proposed as an alternative for the formation of comentary S_2 molecules. The proposed mechanism can account for the S_2 molecules in Comet Halley as regards their observed production rate and location very near to the nucleus.
