The combination of the broad band narrow field instruments, the wide field cameras and gamma-ray burst monitor along with the operational capabilities of the whole BeppoSAX mission provide an unprecedented opportunity to study the X-ray variable sky. This presentation will focus on two main topics: the broad band spectra and variability of AGN and the capabilities of the mission to observe transient phenomena, presenting some key results obtained on gamma-ray bursts, in particular the discovery of X-ray afterglows. Further results on galactic sources are illustrated by other contributions by team members.
