Gamma-Ray Sources, Gamma-Ray Bursts, Gamma-Ray, Characteristics And Properties Of The Milky Way Galaxy

Measurements of the 50 keV to 10 MeV gamma-ray spectra from the inner Galactic ridge made by the OSSE are reported. Spectra are found to comprise a soft low-energy continuum component which can be represented by an exponentially absorbed power-law, a positronium continuum, a 0.511 MeV positron annihilation line, and an underlying continuum which is consistent with a power-law extension of the cosmic-ray induced spectrum observed above 30 MeV. The cosmic-ray component is measured from ~200 keV to 10 MeV. This component appears to exhibit a constant spectral shape over the 0° to 60° longitude range, in agreement with measurements above 30 MeV. When account is taken of variable discrete source contributions and the energy-dependent collimator response, both the soft low-energy continuum and the cosmic-ray induced continuum longitude distributions are consistent with the Galactic CO distribution.
