In 1979 Pioneer 11 visited Saturn. Prominent among its findings was the discovery of material external to Ring A. The observation, though surprising, was less a revelation than confirmation of a suspicion harboured by visual observers as long ago as the mid-nineteenth century; one that burgeoned into a reality during the edge-on epoch of the rings in 1907-1908. Subsequently such material has been detected by a number of large Earth-based instruments during ring crossings, so at least we know the subject is not just the province of spacecraft exploration. It is not without interest therefore, to revisit the historical record and trace its progress from mysterious first intimations in the mid-nineteenth century to resolution over a century later in the recognition of a feature with distinct identifiable characteristics.
