The first six years of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory mission has led to significant advances in the study of active galactic nuclei, as shown in various contributions to these proceedings. However, the given the inherent nature of AGN-broadband, non-thermal emission which exhibits variability at all wavelengths over many time scales-empirical insight into the multi-epoch, multi-wavelength behavior is essential before the underlying physics can begin to be deciphered. This is particularly true for the blazar subclass of AGN detected by EGRET, but it also pertains to the lower-luminosity radio-quiet AGN detected with OSSE. Fortunately, this situation was recognized early on and a number of coordinated multiwavelength studies have been successfully carried out both as carefully preplanned monitoring campaigns and as targets of opportunity. Also fortunate has been the overlap with the first 6 years of the CGRO mission of several space-based observatories covering portions of the X-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared spectrum inaccessible from the ground, accompanied by recent advances in ground-based gamma-ray astronomy data acquisition and analysis techniques. We review accounts of multiwavelength studies involving CGRO from the published literature and from new material presented at this conference, noting some of the key results as well as some remaining ambiguities.
