The mid-IR spectra obtained for Mercury at two equatorial longitudes are
compared with terrestrial and lunar samples and found to exhibit
spectral features indicative of plagioclase feldspar. These abundant
feldspars of various compositions imply a planetary surface that is
heterogeneous, so that Mercury is highly differentiated.
