Radar observations of Mercury are used as a basis for comparison of the planet's geology with that of the moon. The similarity of the two bodies' quasi-specular scattering properties indicates that their surfaces are rougher and more porous than those of Venus and Mars. In addition, the smooth plains of Mercury exhibit the quasispecular smoothness and down-bowed topographic characteristics of lunar maria, suggesting that the plains and the maria are geologic analogs.
