RECENTLY, several new extraterrestrial Lyman-α measurements have been made available from Venera 2, 3 and 4 (refs. 1 and 2), OGO 3 (ref. 3), Vela 7 (ref. 4), Mariner 6 (ref. 5) and OGO 5 (refs. 6 and 7). The two groups operating with the OGO 5 satellite have given so far the most comprehensive analysis of the celestial distribution of extraterrestrial Lyman-α radiation in their sky map of Lyman-α isophotes, which contains an almost complete representation of the directional distribution of Lyman-α background radiation.
