Recent observations of cosmic rays above 10(19) eV will be briefly reviewed. The implications of the experimental results and the challenges they pose to current models of cosmic ray production will be discussed. Predictions of the various models would be presented, and it will be shown that future high energy cosmic ray detectors, such as the planned Auger detectors, as well as high energy photon and neutrino detectors, would allow to either confirm or rule out the suggested models. Implications for other fields of Astrophysics will be briefly mentioned.
