The ASCA satellite has produced some high-quality data of AGN in the 0.5-10 keV band with high sensitivity and good energy resolution. ASCA has now resolved the complex shape of the iron K line in several AGN. Whilst rapid variability of the X-ray continuum is common in many AGN, so far there have been only three sources in which variability of the iron K line has been detected. Using observations of both the continuum and iron K line variability we show how an upper limit to the mass of the putative central black hole can be estimated from (1) time lags and (2) relativistic time dilation.
