The structure of Venus' atmosphere according to data provided by Pioneer Venus is discussed, including information on the operational procedures of the mission and a summary of the Soviet Venera missions and their two photographs of Venus' surface. Data indicate that the densest band of the haze surrounding the planet lies between 49 and 52 km above the surface, with the density being approximately equal to that of earth's clouds, and that liquid droplets (the smallest being 1 to 1.3 micron in diameter) and solid grains 10 to 20 microns across (believed to be sulfur crystals) are present in Venus' haze. Significant amounts of helium, neon, and argon-36 were found in the planet's atmosphere, suggesting retention of some of the primordial atmosphere and formation of Venus from material quite different than that of the neighboring planets. Two puzzling phenomena were observed: existence of an ionosphere on the planet's night side, and lack of significant conversion of CO2 to CO and O or O2.
