An analysis of the initial mass function based on data for binary-star components, field stars, cluster members, and material in spectral and photometric catalogs indicates that the function is not monotonic. The number of stars having masses of 3-4 solar masses is smaller than predicted by the customary power law. Stars may be deficient in certain other mass intervals as well.
