Spectroscopic scans of the U Gem system in the red and near-IR are reported. A composite spectrum is plotted which reveals that the secondary star in U Gem is an M dwarf whose spectrum contains a strong CaH feature at 6385 A and at least three TiO bands. The best estimate of the secondary's spectral type is shown to be dM4.5 with a probable error of about half a spectral class. The emission-line behavior of the U Gem system is briefly discussed.
