Having always been an avid amateur astronomer, and for a number of years a professional, the author will try to answer some of the questions of a non-professional astronomer who would like to participate in "real science" and get published in recognized international journals. What to do? How to do it? Where to start? How to begin? As an observational astronomer who has dabbled in a number of fields -- the search for novae, supernovae, and X-ray sources, and the photometry of comets, asteroids, and variable stars -- and who has tried his hand in the analysis of data in several other more obdurate fields -- stellar atmospheres, globular clusters, planetary nebulae and quasars -- the author will comment on his own experiences, especially with small telescopes, and suggest strategies to help the sometimes confused non-professional who wants to help the sometimes haughty professional.
