We review the multiwavelength spectral signatures of black holes in x-ray binaries and briefly compare them with those of AGNs. We discuss the possible origins of the different spectral components and their temporal variability, both long term and short term. Applications of the advective disk solutions and thermal-limit-cycle instabilities to the x-ray novae and multistate transitions of persistent sources will also be highlighted.
