Questions regarding the relative contributions from discrete sources and continuum to the flux of cosmic gamma rays are considered. Brindle et al. (1978) have presented evidence which shows that the continuum radiation provides at least 95% of the flux. The reported investigation has the aim to derive more reliable estimates of the discrete source contribution using both a simple geometrical model and properties of X-ray sources and pulsars as a guide. Since these different approaches lead to very similar results there is some justification for confidence in their validity. The contributions from two possible types of source population are considered separately, taking into account sources with high intrinsic luminosity and low space density and sources with low intrinsic luminosity and high space density.
