It is shown that the assumption of the cosmic censorship hypothesis leads to rather unexpected and somewhat strange consequences. Specifically, Hawking's (1973) black-hole area theorem is applied to study the motion of an axisymmetric ring of test particles in the equatorial plane of a Schwarzschild black hole. The test-particle equations, combined with the black-hole area theorem, are found to predict the existence of stable, almost circular orbits just outside the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. It is concluded that either cosmic censorship must be incorrect, and the particles enter the black hole, or the rather peculiar, stable, and almost circular orbits exist at an infinitesimal distance outside the event horizon.
