Iron grains, due to their lack of spectral features, play an important but poorly-understood role in the production of dust by AGB stars. By modelling the spectral energy distributions of such stars, one can accurately identify the infrared excess which these grains cause. We have analysed dust production among giant stars in several globular clusters at different metallicities. We present new understanding of iron’s contribution to the earliest stages of dust production around AGB stars, and how dust species change as stars evolve. We also discuss the production and destruction of iron-bearing silicates, the metallicity dependance of dust production and composition, and what dust species can tell us about the state of the stellar wind in the dust-forming zone.
