The role of particle acceleration in the large-scale structure and evolution of strong collisionless shocks under astrophysical conditions is considered. The reaction of these particles on the dynamical structure of the shock wave is discussed theoretically and in the light of numerical calculations. Astrophysical implications for the evolution of supernova remnants are considered.
