The distribution of brightness over the apparent disk of Algol's secondary component is investigated. A theoretical near-IR light curve of Algol's secondary minimum is analyzed. Attention is called to a photometric anomaly exhibited by W UMa-type systems, viz., an apparent excess of gravity darkening over their distorted surfaces by a factor close to 2. A possible explanation of the discrepancy between theory and observations is considered.
