Numerical integrations over 100,000 yr of fictitious asteroid orbits with semimajor axes of 3.6 to 3.9 AU show a partial depletion of an initially uniform distribution of asteroids. The depletion is caused by close encounters with Jupiter. Two models are used: the three-dimensional restricted sun-Jupiter-Saturn model and the same model without Saturn. The orbits of the remaining fictitious objects are compared with the orbits of the observed minor planets. Protection mechanisms which avoid close approaches to Jupiter are presented for both the observed and the fictitious asteroids.
