A method has been developed for measuring the intrinsic angular size of an elliptical galaxy. This method corrects for image degradation, is independent of the intensity scale, and employs the two-dimensional Fourier transform of the galaxy and a reference star on the same exposure. Electrographs of five nearby elliptical galaxies have been obtained in order to study the feasibility of the method. Surface brightnesses and ellipticity profiles for all the program galaxies are derived, along with B-V profiles for the central parts of two of the galaxies. The effective diameter, as defined by de Vaucouleurs (1962), is also obtained for four of the galaxies. The angular size of each galaxy is derived by means of the Fourier technique and compared with the effective diameter and various other published angular diameters. It is expected that the present technique can be used to measure the angular size of distant as well as nearby galaxies, which is of importance for the determination of the deceleration parameter, q sub zero.
