An 'archetypal' problem concerning a hot star and a surrounding envelope is considered. It is suggested that when the envelope is almost fully ionized by radiation from the hot central star, the state of the envelope material becomes very sensitive to physical conditions. As a consequence of very small perturbations in the density or incident radiative flux (as small as one part in 10,000), a previously opaque envelope may clear up, and any preexisting star within it may appear suddenly. Results of an illustrative calculation are presented, and the different time scales involved in the process are computed. Envelope opacity in the visual spectral region is examined, along with possible applications of the theory.
