The maintenance of synchronous rotation of a white dwarf in an AM Herculis binary is investigated. In the general case, with the accreting pole lying out of the orbital plane, the accretion torque has three components to be cancelled. This can be achieved by the effect of a magnetic field intrinsic to the secondary, but only under certain conditions. If the secondary's surface field is less than about 100 G, then only certain combinations of its strength and orientation result in synchronous states of the white dwarf. Furthermore, stable states are only possible in which the accreting pole lags the motion of the line of stellar centers. However, these restrictions are lifted for stronger secondary fields, which result in the magnetic torque determining the synchronous orientation.
