Synchrotron self Compton models in which a steep particle distribution is continuously injected in a compact source are considered. The particle and photon distributions are derived under the assumption of steady state. Due to reabsorption, the synchrotron process cannot emit the bulk of the injected luminosity, which is mainly produced by multiple-order Compton scatterings. This constrains the overall spectral index of the radiation spectrum to be flatter than unity, as long as strong reacceleration of the relativistic particles is not at work.
