Exosat observations of NGC 4151 for the June 1983 to March 1986 period are reported. It is found that the very soft spectral component noted remained constant over the observing period, while the medium-energy X-ray continuum emanating from the active nucleus of the galaxy varied by a factor of 10. The results show that the photon spectral index generally remained close to 1.55, and that the observed spectral variations were predominantly associated with changes in the complex absorbing column present in NGC 4151.
