The conversion of Alfven waves to fast-mode waves and the subsequent dissipation due to Landau damping near the height where the coronal-hole nozzle diverges rapidly are examined. The parameters which describe the conditions in which the Alfven wave will be converted are discussed. It is found that refraction can cause the conversion of up to half of the Alfven-wave energy to fast-mode energy, or vice versa. It is shown that MHD wave conversion useful for wind acceleration near the sonic point requires wave refraction caused by the variation of the Alfven speed across the coronal hole.
