Light curves on the UBV system are presented for the first time for this B1 III + B binary system which has an orbital period of 5.6 days and is an established member of the open cluster IC 2581. Using previously published spectroscopic data, the three light curves are analyzed using the synthesis code 'Light', and it is concluded that both components lie close to their respective limiting Roche surfaces. The total mass of the system is about 65 solar masses, and its age of seven million yr, derived from evolutionary models for massive single stars, is in good agreement with the age of the cluster derived from isochrones matched to the color-magnitude diagram. In the theoretical HR diagram, both components are located near the core hydrogen exhaustion phase and might be expected to exhibit pulsational instability.
