High-resolution CCD spectra of the possible premain sequence star HD 163296 were obtained in four spectral regions encompassing the lines Ca II 3933 A, Mg II 4481 A, Si II 6347 A and 6371 A, and H-alpha. Although the absorption lines all show considerable rapidly-varying distortions in the form of overall asymmetries and/or multiple components, no genuine period has been detected. The observations are consistent with the assumption of multimode nonradial pulsation.
