CCD spectroscopy was used to obtain 24 high-resolution line profiles of Ca II 3933 A, Mg II 4481 A, Si II 6347 A and 6371 A, and H alpha for the probable premain sequence star HR 5999. The results suggest that HR 5999 is intrinsically variable, and that the star was observed near its maximum visual brightness. A time series analysis of previous visual magnitudes reveals a modulation of the light curve with a period of 48.68 days and an amplitude of 0.25 mag in V.
