We designed a prototype instrument in order to obtain large numbers of image triplets for asteroid searches. Operational since 2001 April, the Moving Object and Transient Event Search System (MOTESS) instrument has yielded discovery images of several hundred asteroids. An ancillary program for analysis of these images has, in addition, revealed thousands of new variable-star candidates. Constructed at very modest cost, the MOTESS system demonstrates how a simple design can reliably provide a voluminous stream of high-quality science data.
