The paper presents a new method for adjusting the phase of the visibility function with closure equations. The problem is defined in matrix notation and solved by using Lagrangian multipliers and a weight matrix. The final equation is proved to be a general solution in the sense that it not only unifies all the existing 'baseline oriented' methods but it also allows one to include any a priori knowledge in the analysis. Due to the flexibility of the new method, the elements of the weight matrix can be changed dynamically during a hybrid mapping iterative procedure. This is particularly useful when intercontinental baselines are used along with the intracontinental ones. The problems connected to the situation of closure phase triangles with large ratios of the longest and the shortest legs are analyzed. The faster convergence obtained by assuming low weights on the two long legs of the triangle is discussed.
