The photoelectron emission and the plasma particle collection compete to determine the equilibrium electric charge carried by dust grains in interstellar clouds. This charge is computed as a function of the position of the grain in different physical models of clouds obtained by solving, in a self-consistent manner, the chemical equilibrium equations and the transfer equations of UV radiation in dust and gas. The clouds have hydrogen number densities ranging from 10 to 10,000/cu cm. The grain charge can reach high values (up to 170 proton charges) in hot diffuse clouds. The results are very sensitive to the mean UV interstellar radiation field (whose determination could fairly differ from one author to another). Three parameters appear to be essential but with different levels of sensitivity of the charge: the gas density, the temperature and the total thickness of the cloud.
