We analyze the galaxies detected in the largest 21 cm blind survey undertaken to date. Over half the searching was conducted in the zone of avoidance. The objects found are compared to optically selected samples of isolated, magnitude-limited, and low surface brightness galaxies and are found to be consistent with selection from the same population as the low surface brightness sample. No previously unknown, extremely faint population was found.
The H I search technique for finding galaxies in the zone of avoidance is effective in cases of large dust optical depth and far-infrared confusion by galactic sources. Use of the IRAS database is a complementary method.
The observed H I mass function precludes the existence of a large population of low-mass, low surface brightness dwarf galaxies. The contribution to the cosmic mass density by H I in the universe leads to ΩH I = 2 × 10-4, with spirals as the major contributors. Where the H i-selected sample overlaps with optical redshift surveys of magnitude-limited and low surface brightness galaxies, all samples are seen to trace the same structures. Low surface brightness, gas-rich galaxies do not fill the voids.
