Interstellar nitrogen abundances toward 25 stars are determined on the basis of the N I equivalent widths of Bohlin et al. (1983) and the oscillator strengths calculated by Hibbert et al. (1985) using configuration-interaction wavefunctions. The results are presented in tables and compared to those obtained by York et al. (1983) using oscillator strengths deduced for the observed curves of growth of other N I lines. N I is found to be undepleted toward reddened and moderately reddened stars, in agreement with theoretical models of nitrogen formation and adhesion into grains or grain surfaces in the interstellar medium and in disagreement with the finding of depletion by Ferlet (1981) and York et al. (1983). Toward unreddened stars, a depletion of 0,2 dex is attributed to contamination of Lyman-alpha lines by stellar absorption, to systematic errors in the data observations or the oscillator strengths, or to the presence of N-depleted matter toward these objects.
