JHKLM photometric techniques for IR astronomy are surveyed, with a focus on color transformations, calibration methods, and standards. The historical development of the system is traced; the match among atmospheric windows, filter bands, and the InSb-detector sensitivity range is considered; the extinction corrections employed are discussed; solar, black-body-comparison, and model-atmosphere absolute-calibration methods are characterized; and the color equations relating the standard system of Carter (1984) to previous standards are listed in a table.
