THERE are some close Earth satellites carrying radio frequency transmitters. By means of the Doppler effect, the radiation from the transmitters received at ground stations is used to infer the line-of-sight velocity component. The satellite navigation system known as TRANET, and the series of TRANTET satellites, use the Doppler system. The Doppler data have been successfully used for almost a decade in orbit analysis, geodetic research and navigation.
