This high-resolution 6cm VLA image of the nuclear region of the bright spiral galaxy Messier 51 shows the southern bright extranuclear cloud (XNC), the nucleus, and the large northern ring. The XNC is resolved into a bright bow-shaped region surrounded by a halo of faint emission and is connected to the nucleus by a thin sinuous "jet-like" feature. The nucleus is extended in the direction of the northern ring but no connection is visible. Since the ring appears dynamically more mature than the cloud, perhaps we are seeing the results of alternating one-sided ejection.
