In order to decipher the chronology of solid solar system bodies it is mandatory to investigate the influence of shock on the various radiometric systems since many extraterrestrial rocks underwent shock metamorphism in addition to other impact-associated processes. In particular, because of its low closure temperature the K-Ar chronometer is suitable to date secondary events and surface evolution. All studies up to now indicate that a total reset is not possible by shock alone, even at high pressures. Moreover, a study on a plagioclase single crystal resulted in negligible Ar-40 losses at high shock strains. For the first time we investigated the shock effects on a rock with a mineralogical composition very similar to extraterrestrial rocks, a 2-b.y.-old gabbro from the Bushveld complex, South Africa. Our study for the first time reveals redistribution of radiogenic Ar-40 among different mineral phases and remarkable volatile-element redistribution effects even at moderate shock pressures. Since plagioclase is the most common K-bearing mineral in extraterrestrial rocks and together with pyroxene the most common silicate mineral, the results of our study are of great significance to interpret or reinterpret Ar-40/Ar-39 ages of shocked lunar basalts, of basaltic achondrites as well as of ordinary chondrites.
