A previous argument against a survival of the alpha effect in the limit of infinite electrical conductivity is shown to be inconclusive, though there are important special cases in which it is presumably valid. In fully developed magnetohydrodynamic turbulence the effect can probably survive if with decreasing magnetic diffusivity the magnetic energy spectrum increases self-similarly down to the smallest scales, but is likely to be quenched if there is a spectral shift to small scales.
