The iconography of the Milky Way went through several transformations from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages, the prototype being one of the illustrations of the Germanicus' Aratea. It is based on the myth of Rhea presenting a stone to Saturn to save the life of Jupiter. In the Renaissance, instead, this is replaced by the well-known myth of Juno suckling the little Hercules.
