Reverberation mapping techniques have been successfully applied to the broad line regions (BLR) of three dozen AGN and quasars providing measurements of the central black hole mass (Mbh). These measurements depend on the hypothesis that the BLR gas dynamics are dominated by gravity, consistent with the detection of the Keplerian decline in velocity with radius in the three best studied cases (NGC 5548, NGC 7469, & 3C 390.3, Peterson & Wandel 2000). It is important to verify the black hole masses determined by this technique. If verified, it could then be used to measure the evolution of Mbh over cosmic time and determine Mbh in both radio-quiet and radio-loud AGN spanning a huge range in luminosity. The recent discovery of a correlation between Mbh and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion, σ, in normal galaxies (Gebhardt et al. 2000a; Ferrarese & Merritt 2000) suggests a straightforward (although indirect) method for calibrating these reverberation mapping Mbh measurements. First indications from the only seven active galaxies with reverberation mapping Mbh and σ estimates suggests that the AGNs follow the same relation as that for inactive nearby bulges. The primary goal is to accurately determine the Mbh - σ relation for AGN by measuring σ in the remaining Seyfert 1 galaxies that have been reverberation-mapped. In this proposal we request continuation of a project granted time in the spring to complete our sample by including targets the fall R.A. range.
