Using simple uncorrelated distribution functions for the semimajor axes, the mass-ratios, and the eccentricities, a statistical model for the binaries in the solar neighborhood is constructed. The model is calibrated to give correct numbers of observed visual binaries and is used to study the closer binaries for the Hipparcos mission. The influence of astrometric binaries observed by their photocenters are estimated. It is shown that only a few hundred astrometric binaries are detectable by Hipparcos on account of their curved paths, while many more (of the order of 10 percent) show orbital proper motions of their photocenters greater than the Hipparcos accuracy of 0.002 arcsec/yr. About 0.5-1 percent of the stars are binaries with photocentric semimajor axes greater than 0.002 arcsec and periods in the range 0.8-1.25 yr where the parallax determination is influenced. Faint Main-Sequence stars are found to be the main contributors to these figures. The period-distribution among the resolved Hipparcos binaries is also studied.
